The media centre had to obtain the following requirements:

• Centralized access of all media; 1 data source for all devices
• Access music from every device; Iphone, Ipad, home cinema centre, etc
• Have music and video everywhere available in my house
• View HD movies where desired; in every format
• Listen to music on demand where desired

I experimented with lots of devices, including Apple Airport express, Logitech Squeez box radio, Slingbox powerplug, Conceptronics Grabn’Go media streamer, PS3mediaplayer, NAS devices, etc, but it always ended up with:

• Slow, stuttering connections
• To much apps or remotes to get things going
• To complicated setup for other people to understand
• To complicated set-up made it sensitive for lots or errors and malfunctioning

As I have experienced; a good set-up doesn’t come cheap. Cheap stuff doesn’t work well. Be ready to invest in quality hardware to enjoy your movies and music daily.

I switched from a Windows environment to a Apple network setup; this is why you will read a lot about Apple products. You can get the same experience however in a Windows network environment

The current hardware set-up is as follows:

• HD 3D internet connected tv
• UPC DVR settopbox with Iphone / Ipad app to control your recordings
• PS3 (now only for gaming and 3D blue ray player, but makes a very good mediaplayer)
• Harman Kardon Home cinema speakerset
• Denon multi media receiver
• Mac Mini with Plex and VLC
• Iphone
• Ipad
• Gear4 Universal remote
• Sonos  music system
• Belkin HD Homeplug’s
• Spotify subscription
• Flickr subscription

To get the most out of your hardware configuration, I did the following:

• Make the entire network Gigabit, replacing al cables and components that are not Gigabit

• Where applicable; use optical tos link cables
• Check and renew, if necessary, all internet cables and parts from where the cable enters your house
• Upgrade all hardware to the latest firmware

It basically gives me the following functions:

• Use device like an Ipad or Iphone to control any device in the house. Android apps for other smartphones should be available as well.
• Using Sonos, have all my music (HDD, Spotify and radio) controlled in one app and played in high quality where I want, again controlled with Iphone or Ipad
• Watch HD movies seamlessly

The Media centre experience: Movies

As I found out, you’ll need a full force computer to playback your digital HD movies. So I bought a Apple Mac Mini with electrical/ optical audio out for sound and HDMI out for video display.

I then installed Plex media centre software, which is a great, free, and a very nice media centre tool. You can enrich your plex app with  lots of plugins like Hulu and MTV, to be downloaded from within the app. Using the Iphone and / or Ipad app; you can wirelessly control anything you want. If you rename your movie files exactly the same as the movies are described on International Movie DataBase , Plex is able to automatically update your movie content with information about the movie, actors and so on.

I play my movies from a external harddrive IOMEGA MiniMax, matching the size and color of the Mac Mini.

However Plex is very nice and complete, nowadays I use the simple, les graphical, but fast media player VLC. I also control the VLC software using an other apple computer using screen sharing.

You can also control your mediacentre computer using the free version of LogMein or installing the app Splashtop or Rowmote. I found Splashtop being the most easy and fast remote to use.

I use Apple’s Imovie to import, edit and upload my homemade HD video to YouTube. Don’t forget to set your privacy settings right. Using an Iphone 4, you can directly upload your “HD” movies to the same YouTube account

Notes:

The Ipad and watching movies:

Forget about watching HD movies on your Ipad whilst connected to wifi; movies will start stuttering and even come to a complete stop. A better way to watch movies on you Ipad (and probably every tablet or computer) is to store the movie on the device itself.

I use the MoviePlayer app:

Use cables, no wifi:

I found it impossible to get HD movies stream perfectly from the source to a playback device. It’s just to much data going through a slow wifi connection. Only with cat. 6 or higher Gigabit cables and Gigabit HD homeplugs movies do playback without a glitch. Almost. Don’t be disappointed if you still notice some delay somewhere.

Use toslink cables for audio transfer:

I have my UPC settopbox and  Mac Mini both connected to my Denon multimedia receiver with optical cables. In case of the UPC settopbox this results in my receiver automatically adjusting the surround modus to the program. So when I select a HD channel, sound modus changes automatically into Dolby surround or whatever the recorded sound modus is.

Use a heavy weight multimedia receiver:

To transfer your audio to your speakerset you will need an amplifier. I choose a Denon receiver, even with an optional iPod dock with internet connection (the dock got obsolete….)One of the advantages of a media receiver is that you switch sound AND video input with one button to your output devices. You connect your other device’s display output like settopbox, Mac Mini or Playstation through HDMI to your receiver. Separate you connect the according sound cables to your receiver. You connect your media receiver with one HDMI cable to your tv set. Thus by selecting “TV” on your receiver; you get the sound of your settopbox through your home cinema set and you will get HD video on your tv-set.

I have found a receiver with internet connection (internet radio) not so useful; you can get internet radio using a media centre or Sonos.

The media centre experience: Music

Ripping cd’s into itunes and using Itunes as the centre of my music universe got sticky. Because of my home set-up; the wireless “itunes computer” continuously lost contact with the Itunes library. When you want to use itunes; keep al your music on one (separate) harddisk and don’t copy the content to your local machine. This prevents a lot of unnecessary music copying, thus limiting your local harddisk free space.

To keep things short: get a paid Spotify account. For 10 euro’s a month you can get almost all the music you want, legally, on any device, on demand. Downloading not necessary. Spotify is free to use on any computer. If you want to listen to your music on the go you need to have a subscription. The subscription gives you the possibility to save your desired music in the app.

Recently I got my self some Sonos hardware which, with the new free Ipad / Iphone app, really unleashes my music in a easy way. With the Sonos app I can control:

• My locale digital music, like imported cd’d
• Spotify
• Internet radio
• Other (paid) music services

In the Sonos app there are even more music services to connect, like oldskool 80’s live concerts. The Sonos music system exists for more than 7 years or something, but finally got my attention. Using different pieces of (existing) hardware you are able to connect:

• Your  home cinema set (using your receiver)
• Stand alone or active speakers
• Sonos soundsystem Dock S5

Set-up is an easy one-time procedure using your one network. You can choose to play different kinds of music using different zones (kitchen, living room, bedroom, etc) or you can synch all zones to create 1 big party zone. It works extremely well.

Using Sonos solved a few problems:

• Before I had to use different hardware and apps / remotes to access all my music
• Using a Logitech squeeze box and an Apple Airport express with powered speakers caused stuttering, thus stopping my music from being played
• I now have a future proof and scalable solution, providing high quality sound

The media centre experience: Photos

Before I had several external hard drives, littered with folders and photo files. Besides the risk of an occasional hard disk crash it was not easy to view and share your photos on demand.

My solution: get Flickr access.

For a mere 25 dollars you can upload unlimited photo’s and video to your account, immediately setting them in “private” modus. One of the great advantages of Flickr is that you can easily access your photo’s and videos with almost any device: HD tv set with internet connection, Ipad, Iphone, laptop or any tablet computer.

A good alternative for video is off course YouTube, which gives you the same flexibility regarding devices. It even does HD video upload and playback.

I use Apple’s Iphoto to upload my photos (from camera, SD card or Iphone) to my sets on Flickr. Or Facebook, as you like

The media centre experience: Remote control

Lots of hardware pieces bring a lot of remote controllers……Although you can find al lot of remote apps to install on your Iphone or Ipad and connect to your media server software; it’s still not a universal remote experience. I came across the GEAR4 universal remote which actually works pretty good.

You get a black cylinder that functions as a bridge between your Iphone / Ipad and all your other infrared devices. You connect your Iphone or Ipad using Bluetooth to the remote unit; the remote unit than sends infrared signals in a 360 degrees pattern to you r hardware.

The first set-up takes time; you need to think about “scripts” you want to use, fitting the desired action. For instance, “watching tv” involves switching on the TV, switch on the receiver in TV –mode and switching on the UPC settopbox. When done; it works like a charm. When you have setup your universal remote settings on 1 Ipad or Iphone you can easily clone these settings to other Ipad or Iphones; nice!

The Extra’s:

Spotify:

• I use the desktop software of Spotify to search for new music and add them to my playlists. These playlist automatically synchronize with the Iphone and Sonos. So where ever I am, I can enrich my music collection all the time.
• You can download a app to remotely control your desktop version of Spotify

Itunes:

• Itunes still is a good program to play your music. I used it with an Airport express and the itunes remote app for Iphone. Simply connect your Airport express to your receiver (3.5 mm stereo jack to cinch) and play your tunes wireless. Disadvantage: you only can play your ripped cd’s or downloaded content, not your Spotify playlists or internet radio music

Freecom Music pal:

• Although a very good and simple device, i don’t use it very much because of Sonos. Still, I you want to make the most of your Freecom music pal / squeeze box experience; download the Iphone app which will make you switch between radio channels, adjusting volume and controlling the device way more easy

Remote access to your media centre computer

• For maintenance or in case apps (and mainly the app “server” software)  fails its good to have at least 2 different types of remote access to your media centre computer. Why two? Because sometimes (too often) one of them just quits. I use the web based Logmein tool and the desktop client Teamviewer. Both Free. Teamviewer seems to respond a little bit faster.

Playstation 3

• I found the PS3 to be a very good device; not only did the latest software update turn it into a 3D blue ray player; you can also browse the internet, view your photos and videos, get movies and video clips on demand and play your music with it.
• When you install the free PS3mediaplayer software on your local computer, you get instant access to your local music and video files; like magic! Your PS3 is able to play your HD movies on demand.
• Note: to prevent stuttering; never try this wireless, use gigabit cables but even better: copy the movie files to your PS3 by pressing the green triangle once you have selected the desired file on your PS3 using PS3medialayer
• You can connect your (existing) Bluetooth keyboard to the PS3; makes data input a lot more easy and faster. I occasionally use a Microsoft Laser 7000 keyboard; works like a charm. Even connects to your Ipad.

Doel van de functie

Bordspellen ontwerper en producent IdentityGames.nl  stapt over naar Het Nieuwe Werken.

Drievoudig winnaar van de banche prijs “Bordspel van het Jaar”,  Identity Games, is onlangs als bedrijf overgestapt naar Gmail voor bedrijven. In de markt ook bekend als Google App.

GuidoPostma.nl heeft voor Identity Games IDG) een geïntegreerde e-mail- agenda-, contactpersonen- en file sharing oplossing geïmplementeerd waardoor werkzaamheden effectiever uitgevoerd kunnen worden.

Vanuit de wens van IDG om effectiever te werken, is er een plan opgesteld waarbij de uitgangspunten waren:

• Veel meer gebruik maken van werken “in de wolk” (let op: niet DOOR de wolk zoals MobileMe) en gebruik maken van bijbehorende intelligente productiviteits applicaties
• Centraal opgeslagen e-mail, contactpersonen en agenda; synchroon over mobiele telefoons, laptops, via webmail en middels gebruik van Ipad
• Verhogen van de internet veiligheid en minimaliseren van het risico tot kwijt raken van gegevens door bijvoorbeeld een hardware crash.
• Gebruik van gedeelde agenda’s en mogelijkheid tot plannen van afspraken in agenda’s o.b.v realtime beschikbaarheid
• Delen van bestanden via internet zodat altijd gewenste bestanden centraal benaderbaar zijn en via, bijvoorbeeld mobiele telefoon, doorgemaild kunnen worden

Bovenstaande uitgangspunten zijn gerealiseerd middels de inzet van Gmail voor bedrijven, ook bekend als Google App.

Identity Games en Het Nieuwe Werken

IDG is met 2 weken interne voorbereiding van de een op de andere dag, zonder complicaties of uitvallen van e-mail,  overgegaan op Gmail voor bedrijven (Google app) . Hierdoor kunnen zijn nu:

• E-mail-, agenda en contactpersonen gebruiken, centraal vanuit Google app en synchroon op mobiele telefoon, Ipad, laptop of computer en via het internet
• Eigen en centrale agenda’s delen
• Bestanden delen die centraal zijn opgeslagen
  • Bijvoorbeeld via de mobiele telefoon een bestand nasturen als men niet op kantoor zit
• Ideeën opslaan en delen in online notitieboeken
• Werkverslagen of notulen centraal opslaan middels Google docs.
• Eenvoudig een intranet opzetten voor alle gebruikers
• Thunderbird als mailclient met add-ons waardoor e-mail en agenda in 1 progamma samenwerken (Thunderbird) en Google contactpersonen integreren in het e-mail programma

Daarnaast biedt Google app beveiligde data met zich mee. Omdat de –mail communicatie is gebaseerd op het IMAP protocol behoudt u overal uw gegevens. Na het invoeren van uw accountgegevens heeft u binnen 5 tot 10 minuten al uw gegevens weer paraat indien uw computer crasht of als u een nieuw apparaat heeft gekocht. Dit is van toepassing op computers, mobiele telefoons, tablet pc’s en bij benadering via internet

Google app voor bedrijven

Deze applicatie maakt het vrij eenvoudig en zeer kostenefficiënt mogelijk om agenda, e-mail en contactpersonen overal synchroon te benaderen en te delen. Daarnaast kan er via Google apps marketplace allerlei functionaliteit toegevoegd worden zoals CRM pakketten, e-mail tools, reisplanners, etc.

De (gewenste) bedrijfs-url wordt aan Google app gekoppeld zodat men altijd vanuit de bedrijfsnaam communiceert.

Kosten:

De toepassing is in een gratis versie en in een betaalde versie verkrijgbaar waarbij de betaalde versie voorziet in 25 gig opslag per gebruiker en volledige 24 uurs ondersteuning. Kosten zijn 40 euro per eerste gebruiker en 33 euro per opvolgende gebruiker. Middels een helder centraal online dashboard is de omgeving volledig te beheren.

Alternatieven:

Een alternatief voor Google app is onder andere Apple’s MobileMe, echter is het grootste nadeel hiervan dat men niet vanuit de eigen URL kan communiceren.

• Gebruik met Outlook en BlackBerry
• Gebruik andere e-mailinterfaces waarmee u vertrouwd bent totdat u klaar bent om volledig over te stappen naar Gmail.
